    The Welding Specialist will be responsible for:

    • Developing and delivering training on GMAW & Resistance production weld maintenance processes to assure SAFETY critical weld quality at WMG manufacturing sites
    • Designing GMAW & Resistance welding fixturing and defining corresponding weld equipment requirements for all weld processes
    • Reviewing OEM (Customer) weld specifications and advising Application Design Team (Product Design) in Advanced Quality Planning of Weld Processes, Weld Definition(s) on Product Drawings and product manufacturability (Design for Manufacture & Assembly)
    • Developing Value Stream Maps for awarded product programs in tandem with the WMG Tooling Applications Team, and WMG Quality APQP teams (as assigned)

    Job Duties:

    • Leads problem investigation, root cause determination, permanent actions and verification of action(s) for weld related product failures.
    • Perform validation of metal fabricated parts with weldments for visible defects, joint strength, extent of weld penetration, and conformance with engineering drawings and specifications; Examines welded joint to improve weld process parameters.
    • Specify weld process cell and weld system equipment with respect to safety of equipment, performance of equipment at WM manufacturing sites, and production rates required (capacity analysis).
    • Perform troubleshooting and corrections for development of weldment process parameters (APQP related). Review and approve samples and/or photos of weldments for validation of SAFETY critical weld process parameters in production. Issue and control WMG Weld Procedure Data Sheet for all product weld cells based on validation of process parameters.
    • Develop weld fixturing for part production that meets capacity requirements with minimal defects while being cost effective and maintainable.
    • Complete weld maintenance procedures, control changes and provide training on procedures.
    • Audit, periodically at WM plants, weld maintenance records for completion.  
    • Maintain close communication with Engineers, Maintenance Weld Technician, Quality Technicians and Production employees operating weld cells during shift.

    Knowledge & Education:

    • 2 – 4 years of experience working in a Tier I or Tier II automotive manufacturing environment of metal fabrication.
    •  5 years minimum of production GMAW and Resistance weld experience as well as experience in weld quality inspection.
    •  Working knowledge of MIG & Resistance welding processes and weld terminology (i.e. penetration, leg length, throat, undercutting, porosity, etc.
    • 2 years’ experience in Robotic programming and maintenance of GMAW weld equipment.
    • Possess a valid driver’s license.
    • Able to freely travel to United States, Mexico and EU.
    •  AWS or CWB Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certificates Required.
    • Certified Mechanical Engineering Technologist or Equivalent 3 year Advanced Mechanical Training/Associates Degree.
    • Mechanical Engineer (4 year degree program from North American University) OR Bachelor of Applied Science – Materials Science Option (4 year degree program from North American University).

    Working Conditions:

    • Frequently standing and walking for long periods of time throughout the day to accomplish tasks.
    • While performing the duties of this position, the employee works near power sources, robots and automated assembly machines.            
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to complete repetitive motion, bending, lifting, twisting, crouching, reaching, pushing and/or pulling.         
    • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.     
    • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
    • Overtime as required.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to weld smoke, dust, weld debris, noise, hot metals and weld flash.
